Welcome to Vitality by Design, the podcast where we explore what it really means to live longer and better.
Carey HoweWe're your hosts, Anna and Carey, coming to you from Costa Rica, home to one of the world's blue zones, where longevity isn't a trend, it's a way of life.
Ana HoweEach week we dive into the science, strategies, and mindset behind optimal health and intentional living. Blending modern longevity research with the rhythm, values, and wisdom of life well lived. Because longevity isn't just about adding years to your life, it's about adding life to your years. Let's dive in.
Carey HoweHello, welcome to another episode of Vitality by Design. This is Carey, your host, and today we are being joined by Shaheen. Um Shaheen's the owner of Sheener Health, and Shaheen's path into this field includes yours as an athlete and getting some serious injuries and sort of uh doing some personal experimentation with um that change sort of his business chapter, from what I understand. We'll get into that and he's gonna explain it. But without further ado, Shaheen, why don't you introduce yourself?
ShaheenNice to meet you. Thank you for having me on. Uh yeah, so you know, my name is Shaheen Amraport. Uh I got into peptides and stem cells back in 2009 was the first time I started using them. Uh I was researching them going back into the probably the late 90s to early 2000s. Um basically, I've been an athlete since I was eight years old. I'm 54 now. Um, and I did the traditional sports growing up. Uh went to college, swam, played water polo, uh, and then, but my passion was always surfing, skateboarding, you know, uh snowboarding, you know, skiing that transitioned into snowboarding, uh, you know, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, just all the things that come with injuries. Uh so I had my first serious, you know, from years of playing water polo, uh, my first serious injury in '92. And then I in 94 I had the the San Diego Chargers team doctors rebuild my shoulder, right shoulder for the first time. This thing's had six shoulder rebuilds.
Carey HoweOoh, yeah.
ShaheenSo as I, you know, recovered that first time, I started to try to look into how professional athletes recover. Uh, and going back into like the late 90s, I mean, back then it was all in, you know, I was I was back at the balco, you know, with all the baseball guys were using whatever uh sub supplements that they could find to enhance their performance or recover faster. Uh and then going into the early 2000s, you know, like Kobe going to Germany or you know, athletes going to South America or other places. So I uh I came to find out that you know it was PRP peptides and stem cells, were the three tools that they were using outside the UI United States to help heal themselves and recover. Uh so that just piqued my interest in trying to source where I could find it domestically, um, and to learn more about it, to make sure I used it the right way, uh, not just used it. Because I mean, even with like human growth hormone, I mean, you saw what what all the the athletes were doing back. I mean, you go back to like the 84 Olympics and Carl Lewis was using HGH. Yeah. Uh, you know, but like all the baseball players who was big in baseball, and you know, you overdo it with HGH. I mean, it's great to use when you're using the right amount. When you're going excessive, which a lot of these people do, is you know, they're they're they're physically changed, their bones grew, their hands grew, their heads grew. Like, you know, the Barry Bonson went from a 10 and a half to a size 13. His his head like got bigger. Uh, you can see the facial structure on on the players, like their foreheads or their cheekbones would change, their chin wouldn't grow out. Um, I mean, even with like Hollywood, HGH became big. Um, so I just started learning about it, seeing what people were doing wrong. So when it was time when I wanted to incorporate it into my recovery, I would do it the right way. So 2009, I had a bad crash on a dirt bike and shattered everything. Uh, and my friend's dad had a research lab in Irvine, and he was researching stem cells, and he knew that I was already into it, and I tried the utmost trust in this gentleman because he was just a genius. And he knew that you know I was into regenerative medicine or studying, like learning about it. And so basically, I became his first guinea pig. He said, Hey, you want to try it out on you? And I said, Yeah, let's go. So I got some BPC, I got some HGH, and I got some stem cells. And I had pins and plates and screws, and and my surgeon said he'd never seen a human recover that fast from such a traumatic injury. Uh, so that was my first experience. And as I said, I recovered tremendously fast. Um, and it worked really well. Uh, you know, I've always been involved or around action sports. Um so as I said, I always I knew there would be future injuries and future surgeries uh after that, and that this was something that I would always incorporate into my recovery protocols. Um, the next time I kind of came around, it's probably like 2013. Uh I had severe patella tendinitis in both knees. Um I did all the physical therapy, I tried PRP, uh, I had surgery on my right knee, nothing fixed it. I used BPC and TB, and the the tendonitis went away. And it's that's never come back from that all the way back in whatever 2013 when I used it. Like I couldn't jump rope, I couldn't jump on a trampoline with my kids, my kid at the time, and uh and I was it I said this it was it was the the worst pain and it's gone and it's it never returned. Where I I do a lot of sparring, and so you know you get tendinitis in your elbow or uh Achilles tendinitis comes and goes throughout you know throughout the year, so but the knee tendinitis when I used the BPC and the TB, uh it went away and it never came back. So you know, I just mean you mentioned doing spying.
Carey HoweI mean, anybody who's doing that kind of activity in their 50s is kind of evidence right there that something's working, right?
ShaheenYeah, yeah. You know, so that's yeah, that's you know, I said I'm 54 now and still able to put my body through very high performing situations. Um, you know, my my sport of choice now that I focus on is uh snowboarding. Right. Um that's my biggest passion, and you know, I I train year-round. So the the few days a year that I go to Alaska and jump out of a helicopter, that I'm physically fit, I'm not gonna gas out, you know, I'm not gonna get cramps, and my body's gonna be ready for the toll I put through, put it through. You know, so a couple years ago it was like 270,000 vertical feet in in five days, which you know that's equivalent to Everest top to bottom nine times, you know, for a guy in his 50s to do that. It's it's pretty good.
Carey HoweSome good pow, or was it like sloppy, like wet?
ShaheenNo, it was amazing. It was every every run was like two years worth of fresh tracks.
Carey HoweOh, lovely. Yeah, that's good. I do a fair amount of snowboarding in Utah at a place called Powder Mountain that's kind of that's and uh I know that spot well.
ShaheenI know the guys that own it.
Carey HoweAnd so you know, we take the cat ski up to the you know to the top of Lightning Ridge, and it's super nice, but nothing, not that kind of distance like that I've heard in Alaska, right?
ShaheenWhich would be I mean, the the deepest best snow I ever experienced was in Utah, though.
Carey HoweOh yeah, yeah. So where you're fighting to keep your head above the snow. Yeah, yeah.
ShaheenLike chest deep, you're flying through it. You know, but Alaska is like, you know, we're we're doing angles that are yes, uh, you know, 50 to 60 degrees.
Carey HoweSo and so you feel like um, I mean, you obviously at your age doing those kind of things is kind of evidence that you know the recovery works from you know peptides and BPC and TB500.
ShaheenAnd I don't know if you use KPV for uh oh, so yeah, that's I said I I I came up with the Clow blend as individual before there was a Clow blend, right? That was part of my uh surgery protocol that I would just use on myself. Um uh you know, basically I before surgery I use TA1 to boost your immune system, you don't get any weird infections, and then post-surgery, you know, you go with uh with KPV, BBC, TB, um uh GHK, uh, you know, HGH does help uh speed up recovery as well. Um now I have another peptide that I've incorporated and used with on myself and with a lot of athletes called cartillax. Um we use that. That's a that's a really good one.
Carey HoweYeah, that um we've been using that here. I have a uh uh longevity clinic here in Costa Rica, and you know, we do a fair amount of it, and we actually use a lot of what you just mentioned right there as for pre-stem cell treatment, right? So it's kind of like um you know, you you put you know super fuel into a moped, it's not gonna operate like a Ferrari, right? So if you get the the host you know in Ferrari shape, they're gonna, you know, the the cells are gonna propagate, right, instead of die, right? So it's super, super important. And it's great to hear that just time after time people um reiterating the proof of how well this works. And you mentioned a shoulder injury. It's like here in Marbella, I was duck diving two years ago, and just the pressure of a you know, not such a big wave either, just pulled my shoulder out and ripped my my cartilage. I went for an MRI and they said, Yeah, it's not big enough for surgery, you know, why don't you just try some rehab? And I went straight to the peptides and cartilacs and everything, and then I went back nine months later, they're like, Where's the rib? Like it's gone. It's it's the tear is actually gone. I can't see it. I'm like, well, you know, this is the evidence, right? And so you you've you your website describes you know your sheener health as personalized coaching, nutrition, supplements, peptides when appropriate. And um, what does that look like? Like for a new client who comes into your practice? Like, how do how does it go? How do you go about it? What do you evaluate first?
ShaheenWell, first, uh with a phone call. Um, and it kind of depends on all my clients are referral. Uh I don't do any marketing, I don't do any outbound sales. Uh, you know, a happy client is your best sales and marketing tool that you could ever have. And and I have hundreds of happy clients. So the my referrals are are non-stop. Um I got a a lot of good, uh a lot of retired athletes uh as clients, because I said one one one guy in particular, uh NBA, played 10 years NBA. Uh he he got referred to me. He's 62 now. Uh he had just turned 61. He started working with me. He said his clubhead speed went up nine miles an hour once he started working with me. He went and has nothing to do with weight management. He was his weight was fine. Uh but you know, he got one of the 100 invites for the senior British Open. That's you know, and he's he was just he's like at my energy level, my recovery, my he's all I'm able to do more activities, you know, between the gym and swimming and and everything and the golf, and his body recovers better. Um so yeah, I mean the the clients, you know, what it what what I do is is first is a phone call. Uh if they want to go into the full coaching blood work, uh evaluate that because it's not just about the peptides. I say it's like you want to take a 360 approach, right? Not not everyone's gonna be a good client. You know, like peptides aren't a magic potion, you know, it's not it's not like it's just gonna work by itself, especially if you want performance or endurance or uh other benefits, you know, it's gonna take consistency, it's gonna take discipline, you know, it's gonna take time. You know, it's so it's like there's nothing good happens fast, right? So the I like to work with people that you know, I tell them, like, hey, this just needs to be not like, hey, what's your goal? You know, oh, I got a wedding in three months that I want to look good at, and then that's it. You know, so that that's kind of not the type of clientele. It's like, hey, this this needs to this should be your lifestyle and mentality for the rest of your life, right? Yeah, uh, not just I'm just looking for a quick fix, and then, you know, it with recovery, if it's like a surgery type thing, sure. But anyone that wants to really go with the longevity, the performance, the you know, the anti- every anti-aging, everything, you know, that it's gotta take the right mentality and the right lifestyle for the peptides and everything else to enhance what they're doing and for them to get the most out of their body and out of life, right?
Carey HoweLike, yeah. Well, you hit on something really important. I think a lot of people come to peptides and they have a bad lifestyle. You know, they're out partying and drinking, and you know, and then they expect that, you know, hey, Monday morning I'm gonna shoot a couple peptides and everything's gonna be great, you know. Like uh the most basic things always matter, right? Good sleep, good nutrition, oh 100 body movement, yeah, and and also mindset, right, is a huge thing too.
ShaheenYeah, like you gotta have the right mindset because like I you know, I live the lifestyle that I preach to people, right? Like, I'm not just telling someone to do something that I don't I haven't done myself, right? Like, because people like, oh, I want a six-pack like you. Well, I'm all well, I eat right, I train from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. You know, I do all my dad duties and you know, and then work all day. Uh but it's not didn't just happen by itself.
Carey HoweCorrect, right? And that and that's the part I think so many miss. You know, they're like, Well, the peptides aren't working. Well, you know, you can't eat like that. You got to get sleep, and you know, you gotta get it.
ShaheenWell, that's that's where the interview process comes in, right? I I make them do an intake form, and and I evaluate like, okay, hey, what's your lifestyle? How much do you work out? How do you like what are you doing as a workout? You know, like with the diet, how much alcohol you consume, what type of alcohol you're consuming. You know, like there's all that data plays into you know the results that you're gonna get. Right? So I said my business wouldn't, I wouldn't get referrals if I wasn't getting results. And whether it's performance, longevity, I mean, I have about 80 female clients. I I lost count in in Las Vegas. It started with one. She turned out so good, her best friends, friends of friends, and then it just kind of just pyramided out, you know, trickled down from there. And just non-stop referrals. And yeah, you it's but you know, I preach to them, hey, like you gotta be consistent, you gotta have the right mindset. I mean, I tell them the number one thing for anti-aging is is lifting weights.
Carey HoweYeah, you know, so yeah, number two is sleep, yeah, right?
ShaheenNumber two is sleep. So uh, you know, you start there, you gotta you know make sure that that you know they don't have to I don't lift heavy, I have nothing to prove, right? But you know, I uh I lift, you know, weights are an important part of of the lifestyle, right? Because it's a sarc sarcopenia, like your muscles as Father Time is gonna take muscle, you know, deteriorate your muscles unless you're you lift weights and you eat protein, right? You gotta actively do you know things to counter that, right? But you know, who who wants to be old and fragile and rely on other people to oh pick up my suitcase or you know, open a jar or whatever, right? You know, so you know, use the tools that we have, you know. We should use the tools that we have. Forget about the stigma of you're doing an injection. It's like you're feeling better, you're looking better, you're moving better, you're living better, right? Like, yeah, that's what's important, not like, oh, I'm doing an injection.
Carey HoweYeah, it's it's it's funny, you know, of all the the people that we have on the podcast and and we talk to, it's like everybody comes up with the same sort of three things, right? And that's definitely weight lifting, sleep, and uh, and and basically having a mindset or some kind of prayer or some kind of meditation where you you're mentally kind of getting into a different space, right? And so those three things are always common about uh, you know, some people only mention two, some people all three, but it seems like sleep, weight lifting, and sort of um meditation for nobody, you know, if you're not religious, I I guess you know it's prayer, it's prayer if you're yeah, I'm not religious, but I'm very spiritual, right? And I hear that a lot too, right? And so you do have to sort of quiet the mind down and sort of feel your body, what it's telling you. And you know, a lot of this is yoga type stuff, right?
ShaheenAnd yeah, and I mean, I have friends of mine that I I think you saw you saw the picture of of the the face we did in Alaska. Yeah, it's a 60 degree, and there's a picture of me sitting there, like, and you just see the edge. So a couple of my friends are like, I don't understand that. Like, I'd be too the adrenaline would be too much for them, right? For me, it's actually a calming experience, right? My my everyday life, I'm I'm so I don't know, ADD or ADHD. I got so many, you know, 30 things going on in my head at all times, that in in those moments, there's only one thing, right? Don't fall. Next turn, like it just life slows down, and and everything you get, you you got flow state, right? You're just one don't there's only one thing that your brain is focusing on, right? Don't die, right? Like you're in that moment, you're very present, you're a flow state, right? And uh it's you know, yeah, that's it. That's a very spiritual experience. You know, the the rush hits me afterwards, you know, watching a video of like, oh my god, I just did that. Right? Not in the moment, it's very calming.
Carey HoweYou're in the zone, you know, and athletes talk about that a lot too, right? Being in the zone, like everything feels like it's slow motion, but really, you know, it's just feels like that because they're kind of on a different frequency, right?
ShaheenYeah, I mean, I remember in high school as a national level swimmer, and when you're in having one of those races, like it's just tunnel vision, like you don't hear anything, it's just yes, you're in that zone.
Carey HoweYeah, create. And now, um, let's you had you had mentioned, and I went back and looked at past podcasts you've been on, and you've been on some very good podcasts, by the way. And uh you had talked about um I guess apex peptides you had, and you sort of changed gears.
ShaheenYeah, and the the I'm the brand. I like I've never been about like trying to build a brand, right? Uh online, as I mentioned, I wanted to build a business that kind of like technology can't really just you know. Like at one point, GoDaddy took my domain because they said I buy I had three three sales ever on my website. And uh they took my domain that said I violated a 2008 you know pharmaceutical act. Uh and so I've never had much digital luck. So, and then you know, I was the first Apex peptides. I don't know if you heard there's like three other ones popped up. One of them got rated last week.
Carey HoweYeah, I did that one.
ShaheenI had taken down my site a while ago. I said, hey, I don't care about Apex brand, right? Like I'm not I'm not pushing them all. That name is Tarnished. This is a year ago. I'm like I'm just I do generic labels now. Uh but yeah, it's it's I started, you know, I said now it's just Apex Performance Longevity Group. Um, I'm partnering up with a doctor here in Newport Beach, and we're gonna do a clinic. Uh he's he's one of my clients. Uh and we're doing some stem cell, you know, I refer my stem cell clients to him. Okay. So we're gonna actually partner up on the clinic because you know the peptides are hot now. Everyone's getting into it, but everyone's getting into it for the wrong reasons, right? They're getting into it for the for the for the money grab, right? That's like a little gold rush type of situation because all of a sudden, you know, everyone's like, hey, what do I have to do to get your business? I just opened up a lab, like uh you know, they're they're poaching my reps and people that I've trained uh because they they have cheaper product, right? But they don't understand that there's green listed facilities in China to to get your APIs from. And then there's just facilities. Right. And these people are just sourcing their APIs from wherever they they don't know this information. You know, they get, you know, they I get hit up on WhatsApp by Chinese labs or we have this and we have that. And you know, I that's not the type of, you know, I'm not looking for the cheapest product. I'm I'm looking for the highest quality product for my clients. Correct? Because I the I want results. I don't want, you know, I said I want the referrals. I don't want anyone talking. My reputation means more than making some money, extra money. So you know these people are getting the APIs and then you know I've heard stories of like people in board shorts in their clean rooms and you know the COAs on the APIs being you know dog shit. And yeah and they're like oh it's American made cool American made with shitty ingredients right so American made doesn't necessarily mean better quality and and it doesn't mean necessarily mean bad right there's good and bottom everything right exactly exactly because you know some of these people they're like hey what do I have to do to get your business I'm I'm sitting there going well what price do I have to be and I'm like it's not about that I'm like if I know if I'm smarter than the people making the peptides on the peptides I'm well that's an issue for me. I want to only work with people that are smarter than me that have been that have longevity in this space. So the places that I source my peptides from you know these guys are decade plus in in this space. You know they're not just new to it.
Carey HoweI think you said something very important you know and and I think that the uh the the average person might just be looking for price but I think that the real educated person about peptides is looking for safety number one 100% some kind of clinical authority like somebody who knows what the hell they're talking about right and then you know uh value to it like you you're you give a service you take their labs you you you're concerned you're you know it's it's like you have some kind of concern for the patient's well being right and you want them to achieve their goals yeah if you give them that I don't think you're fighting over price right and so yeah yeah and so yeah that that that's that's another thing you know is that since this is you know peptides are our number one topic everybody wants to know about peptides peptides what more about peptides right and um it's just so wild west out there that it it's gotta be tough for someone wanting to to legitimately find out about peptides and just to go out and you know obviously a lot of them start in the wrong spot you know they're on Facebook and meta trying to look for answers it's probably spot you know you know an AI and then you know I said it's not a one size fits all for peptides.
ShaheenThe protocols are you know it's taking me you know I'm still learning 17 years or 20 years in you know I'm still learning. I'll never say like I'm the most technically educated person on a practical level. Yeah I'm all there's not very many people that have done as many peptides and and uh for as long you know uh as as I have you know Jay Campbell I think is the only guy that uh I really know that's that's been using these things longer than I have right uh but everybody else is kind of like they're new to it and all of a sudden they're trying to sound like an authority it's like yeah I don't consider myself an authority and and I've I mean I don't I don't know find somebody that's been doing for 17 years. I can't you know I found one person.
Carey HoweYeah no I I I mean I feel I know a lot about them and I've only been like maybe 10 12 years doing it.
ShaheenThe first one we did was you know we were doing HGH and whatnot and um someone had mentioned the melanotin rights that you'd get tan with this yeah yeah thing I'm like oh we'll try it you know and you know it does make you you know uh hornier than a billy goat but like yeah yeah we go tan but also the the moles on your body go black yeah you gotta be careful because there's there's there's multiple ways to to dose that one to for the protocol it depends on you know like how what what your if you're fair skinned or uh you know darker skin you know how you want to do it so you know there there's not one protocol for that there's yeah you gotta I remember that back in the day and there was nobody really doing all of the peptides that you hear about today and and now you hear about the new things you know there's the um you know the anti-cancer one that what is it a PNC27 and there's like um yeah yeah yeah LL37 I've been using LL37 for years right so I use it uh I'll use it proactively going into the holidays um to boost your immune system or if you're sick uh I I work with a clinic IV clinic you know and I have had clients that just blast a whole vial have them blast a whole vial into their IV and it kicks the sickness out uh we I mean so we're um we do biodentistry at our clinic right and we're really um we're really big on on on mouth health and and periodontal disease and cavities are two most common diseases in the world right yeah so uh the L37 is help people with periodontal disease which is the root of a bad gut which the gut is the brain of your you know it just has a whole lot of things doing and we we really preach the oxygen toothpaste and that too so that you don't have fluoride and whatnot.
Carey HoweSuch a huge important part but it's like all these parts you know so like obviously you know you know in in the health space you're in that it's not um one particular thing that's gonna make a huge difference it's a lot of little things done right.
ShaheenExactly you know that's why I tell them like I tell people I'm all it's you know it's a lot of work to live the life that I'm living it's not eating 25 different vitamins and supplements a day morning stuff evening stuff you know the the the my more the shots I do in the morning what days I do them the evening plus the diet and and the training and all that it's it's everything plays a factor you know into how I feel right like I I tell people you know like like NED is something I have clients I tell clients to run year round right yes uh but I say like when I do NED like I don't feel like oh I got energy all of a sudden right like yeah but it's it's something I consistently do. So when I they're like well do you feel it I said here's what I feel I'm all I train I you know I'm up between 430 and 515 every day I train for two hours I do my dad duties sometimes I might go surf or box after that work all day and then have my evening stuff with my kid and I don't have an afternoon crash I have sustained energy all day every day you know and then going into a a weekend and then just like I just went and you know in in 42 hours I surfed five times played nine holes of golf you know uh and and just yeah you know hike walked around a little bit down in Baja uh I saw the photos yeah down in Baja Mar. It's one of my favorite points to surf right there in that yeah there were K38 and you know like I said I surfed once Friday night three times on Saturday Sunday morning packed the car and drove home right so after a busy week so you know a lot of people will have the you know they'll just sit around do nothing all weekend after you know I can't sit around and do nothing like I like everything that everything that I'm doing is playing a part in the end result of feeling good and being able to recover and put my body through taxing situations.
Carey HoweWell yeah I mean you're you're adding life to your years not just yours to your life you know and you exactly have that mind that mindset. Yeah it's really cool. So let me twist a little bit um if someone wants more energy like we're talking about nad and better recovery but has limited time and budget like where would what would you tell them? Like because this is kind of the thing like everybody believes that longevity and all these things is for people with a bazillion bucks and all kinds of time right and so what are like some simple fixes that you would you've noticed that I mean it starts it starts with with hormones right like and and age you know but we're at an age where I didn't start doing testosterone until I was 50.
ShaheenBut now you know I'm seeing lab reports and people in the 30s and and 40s they have you know look testosterone in the 300s and 400s you know and that's not good. So you know being having a balanced hormones right out I mean alcohol consumption you know uh diet you know eating real food is is you know is huge you know it it sucks that you have to go to a grocery store and there's a section that's organic for like there's a healthy food section in a grocery store like everything should be healthy right yeah like makes no sense well you know like just putting the right fuel in your body you know just you're making the right choices right like getting the right amount of sleep uh you know and then and then bringing in you know different peptides like you know NAD is good but there's also a lot of like vitamins and supplements that that can help out you know that they should that people should be taking um so yeah as far as energy uh yeah I mean NAD is great you know Mod C but that's you know that there's a specific uh a protocol to that so if someone's not moving like I don't recommend just doing MOTC for the sake of doing Mod C. You gotta be lifting most likely right and yeah but like NAD is is a good one right to that that's a good and then and and your hormones like I would start there all right like making sure that your hormones are optimized.
Carey HoweAnd that's with the blood test obviously and you're gonna check that um you know where where their test and free test is at right and also on top of that their their estrogen right you want to make sure that they're not exactly overdoing it with the test and then the estrogen pops up and you have you're not blocking it or or those things right yeah yeah so yeah and then you gotta just yeah making sure your your red blood cell counts not too high you know your hemocrit so monitoring that uh I'm not a big believer in the like you know I I've had high cholesterol for 20 years.
ShaheenYou know like well they keep they keep moving almost every blood work I look at everyone's got high cholesterol right that's because they move the goalposts you know what was what was normal in the 70s is is death you know in in the current day right like oh my god your cholesterol get on a statin right away's gonna get you Alzheimer's and and other issues right so actually we have a lot of people coming off of statins from using um red at shrewtide right I don't know if we can really say that we're just talking about research here. Yeah yeah but uh yeah and so I think the whole um you know we've been lied to definitely right like the traditional medicine oh it's you know disappointing 100% yeah I mean these people aren't taught metabolic health or nutrition or actually well they don't prescribe exercise right like they don't ask the questions I have you know I I don't I said I I'll I'll talk to a surgeon or specialist but like family practice is that's bullshit for me I don't need someone that's not you know not healthy telling me what's anything any information about health right uh so yeah it's kind of just you know I tell people like yeah the pharmaceutical industry came around but for good intentions but as soon as institutional investors and everyone else got involved and it's about share price and profits quarterly profits you know outdoing the year before you know all that like it's it lost its integrity right like it's a healthy person doesn't make make you money right yeah so they want you as as young as possible in the system you know between the vaccines and everything else that you know they want a continual client for life.
Carey HoweYeah I I think it's a shame you know one of the biggest things I feel is a great shame is that um you know there's good doctors good people that wanted to get out and learn their field and and and do things that make a difference and then you know five six years into their practice they feel like they're just a compliance officer for big pharma and insurance you know they step one step outside of that you know that line and they they risk their license being taken and now they feel like they're just compliance officers and they're just giving you what they're supposed to drug dealers legal drug dealers yeah it's it's sad and and it's and they're trapped in it right it's not their fault right and I don't blame doctors for that I I know many great doctors and they come to the clinic in Costa Rica they're getting stem cells they're getting peptides and you say hey do you prescribe these to your clients they're like hell no no way we can't do this I know I know they're good for me and I can do them but we got to do this that and the other or my license comes off the wall you know I have doctors that are my clients correct right they go what's your medical background I'm all absolutely none but my practical background is very extensive.
ShaheenThey're like okay cool sign me up and that's an interesting fact and and I wonder how much of that is going to change over the next sort of 10 years in medicine as we know it right so it's there there more and more doctors are starting to come on board with the peptides right you know the issue with peptides is is they're inexpensive to make right there there's no you can't patent them so you know big pharma's trying to do whatever they can to suppress I mean there's gonna be a big crackdown coming now right soon but it's kind of needed at this point there's too many people that shouldn't be in this space in the space yeah uh so there should be a uh you know a lot of people taken out that are just you know like just like that apex peptides guy you know tax a bit you bought like he was doing all sorts of shit because what happened was when I did have a website his customers were calling me for their customer service issues uh I'm like I gotta take this thing down yeah I got bust with like actually a hundred Rolexes I don't know just his his his intentions were wrong you know and that's the key word there I think the whole key to good and bad is is the the top of the of the channel's intentions you know what what your CEO and who he is is has more to do with with with how well the peptides are going to be in the service and the quality and the safety and all that thing.
Carey HoweYou know there's bad players in literally every everything right there's good bad doctors there's there's good and bad in everything. So I think yeah you're right there's gonna be a big change and there is going to be a price and a cost for that right for sure. Yeah yeah and I think we're ready for it. I I think the the benefits way outweigh the negative side you know and it's probably gonna cost you a little more to feel safe let's face it.
ShaheenYeah you know but I I tell people hey if you're price shopping for something you're injecting in your body well you're an idiot well that's not yeah you're not someone I want to work with because that's just the wrong mentality to take into into this space right like oh I found it online for this cheap. I'm like cool well they're not gonna tell you how to use it you know and they can lie all they want about you know made in the US or made this or put whatever they want on the label or the COA or you know any of that. So well good luck. Well you want to if something goes wrong there's no one to hold accountable.
Carey HoweCorrect right yeah yeah we see it we see a lot of that you know the price shopping and whatnot and we try to stay away from it you know the uh but I I guess you know there's just so many people wanting to get into it it's very hard to educate everybody whenever you can't even talk about it on you know anywhere without getting into it you know and so I have very bad digital luck yeah so that creates problems but I think there there'll be a solution because they are they do work and and that's that's a key thing you know and I think that people in the space that you're in now are are are answering the number one question that medicine has sort of forgotten about is that how well the the actual patient's doing right or how yeah you're concerned over the patient and they've lost that right they it's just about writing you another prescription and hopefully you live long enough to come in and get it refilled. Yeah kind of thing right yeah and so yeah that that's good.
ShaheenSo I said I tell people I'm all hey a surgeon can fix you but they don't know the healing part right that's why with the athletes they they because I've done it like I've healed so many times and I then I still I have you know the big wave world champion messaging me like oh my god you're an inspiration I'm like you serve 100 foot waves I'm like you're my friggin' inspiration right but when people like that because I help them recover from an injury you know you know give you credit it's it means a lot right when you're helping people and because they listen they'll come listen to me because of my experience and because I put my body through what they put their bodies through right from recovery to preparing to perform right I'm not just as I said not telling them to do something I haven't done and to be able to do it at my age means a lot to them right it's a lot of credibility. Yeah and and you do come highly recommended in in the surf industry like a lot of the guys that I talked to I think Mark Marino was the guy who kind of put us together right that uh yeah mark's a great guy like I got a I got a pro surfer coming like some 19 year old kid that he's got a contest next week he tweaked his knee uh one of his agents like Col Shaheen you know yeah well that's good I mean and and that's a good industry for you know real truths about staying fit and healthy right yeah you're not paddling out in giant waves and and and and not in good shape and good mental shape and everything else yeah that's really exciting let's do a quick rapid fire type thing right so if there was one recovery habit that you'd keep for life what would it be ooh I I'd probably go with I mean just for for me it's my shoulders right but so I do shoulder rehab as part of my daily routine right it that's gonna be different that's a very unique answer right for me.
Carey HoweYeah that's right and how about uh one claim that you think people should stop repeating that probably that the that ties will will work without the work you know good one yeah um how about this one question every client should ask before trying any new intervention what uh well asking about where to sourced where to source uh as far as the peptides for sure right yeah and I think that's the most interesting topic that people want to hear about to be quite honest like it's always peptide we we hear it more than anything else um last one what does perform better mean to you now where you are today as compared to back when you first injured your shoulder I just being able to push my like I feel better now after six surgeries than af after three surgeries right uh performing better is is just being able for your body to to do the things you're mentally wanting it to do okay good and so lastly when a listener learns about Sheener Health um how can they get how can they get to you get treated what's the way that they can find their way to they can yeah they can go to the website sheenerhealth.com okay and then book a call schedule a call um and that's how I get the ball rolling with them but as I said as I mentioned um you know the the how do you measure their their um progress or what what's the the tools they use to measure what they're well it starts with with the intake form and what their goals are right if between blood work you know body scan you know if it's if it's weight loss uh you know you you start with the baseline at the beginning and then you know three months in or whatever the first however long the first protocol lasts right at that you know you you you check in and whatever six weeks eight weeks okay like what's going on uh because you know I've had people that oh I haven't you know dropped a single pound I'm like well that's you're doing something wrong with your lifestyle yeah that's because right yeah you know
ShaheenLike, oh I tell people, especially with GLP, is like, you know, stay away from diet sodas. That's the worst. Sodas are bad. Wine, you know, just excessive alcohol is going to negate the benefits of the peptides.
Carey HoweYeah.
ShaheenRight? Then then the diet part and and making sure you lift weights. Yeah. Because you don't lose muscle.
Carey HoweYeah. Well, very, very, very interesting topic. So I'll I'll put the information for the Sheener Health website on on the podcast. And so if people want to get a hold of you, hopefully they can get a hold of you. On a completely different note, I hear there's some good surf out there right now today, right? I think it might be mid-day.
ShaheenIt's starting to hit today. So maybe the next couple days. It's not as big.
Carey HoweI got the surf line uh notification this morning that it's four to five and gonna be firing right about now. Yeah. That's good.
ShaheenYeah, I was hoping uh in Baja, you know, when I originally set up planned to go down there, the swell looked like it it was gonna hit. I ended up riding a nine nine six down there because it was so small.
Carey HoweYeah, and well, and you guys are having a lot of heat wave right now, so you're like in trunks.
ShaheenOh my god, you know what I mean? Like yeah, yeah, yeah. Water 73 and yeah, board shorts, flip-flops. Oh this is business attire.
Carey HoweYeah, it's like us here in Costa Rica, like all the time it's like that, right? Now, yeah. I'm going back to um LA or Orange County, Huntington Beach next week. So I'm hoping there's still some swell and the water.
ShaheenOh, there's yeah, there will be. Uh well, um I'm you ought to be able to do that.
Carey HoweI don't own a wet suit here anymore. So yeah, I got rid of all my wetsuits, you know. Um so yeah.
ShaheenNo, it's it's still uh we're trunk and it's still here.
Carey HoweAll right. I'm stoked. Yeah.
ShaheenYeah.
Carey HoweAnyway, Shaheen, it's been great having you. Super interesting conversation. Um I'll forward you um I'll forward you the finished version of this. Cut out what I'm saying right now.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Carey HoweAnd we'll uh you know, we'll give you some some stuff to use on your on your website if or sorry on your your social media if so if you so choose. And um go there. Yeah, next time I'm out there, I'd like to just meet up and you know just say. Yeah, if you're here next week, I'm around.
ShaheenAll right. I'm around one, yeah, Thursday. I'm gonna leave for uh go go to Vegas, go see Metallica at the Spear.
Carey HoweOh, the Spear. Wow, that's gonna be I haven't been there yet. Right. We got we got Iron Maiden playing here this Friday night here in San Jose.
ShaheenI think I'm gonna take my kids on Saturday uh to the new desert surf garden in Palm Springs.
Carey HoweThat's up and running now.
