Welcome to Vitality by Design, the podcast where we explore what it really means to live longer and better.
Carey HoweWe're your hosts, Anna and Carey, coming to you from Costa Rica, home to one of the world's blue zones, where longevity isn't a trend, it's a way of life.
Anna HoweEach week we dive into the science, strategies, and mindset behind optimal health and intentional living. Blending modern longevity research with the rhythms, values, and wisdom of life well lived. Because longevity isn't just about adding years to your life, it's about adding life to your years. Let's dive in.
Carey HoweWhat is biohacking? Really? It's taking ownership of your biology.
Anna HoweSo, Carey, biohacking. That word gets thrown around everywhere right now. And depending on who you hear it from, it either sounds fascinating or a little insane.
Carey HoweYeah. Depending on the podcast you're listening to, biohacking either sounds like, hey, I'm improving my health, or I sleep in a hyperbaric chamber and eat algae grown on Mars.
Anna HoweExactly. People picture cold plunges, crazy supplements, wearable gadgets, people taping their mouths shut at night. It can look a little extreme.
Carey HoweBut the funny thing is that biohacking is actually way simpler than people think. And its core, it's just this understanding how your body works and supporting it instead of fighting it.
Anna HoweRight. Exactly. It's it's not about turning yourself into a science experiment. It's really about becoming intentional with your biology.
Carey HoweMost people are trying to do this anyway. They want more energy, they want to sleep better, they want to feel sharper mentally, they want to age well and live longer. Biohacking is simply learning how the body actually works. So you can start making decisions that support it. And once you start doing that, the changes can be pretty dramatic.
Anna HoweSo, what does biohacking actually mean? If you look up the technical definition, biohacking usually gets described as using science and technology to improve human performance, which sounds kind of intense.
Carey HoweYeah, it makes you sound like you need a lab coat.
Anna HoweExactly. But we like to think about it in a much simpler way. So biohacking is really just aligning your lifestyle with your biology.
Carey HoweAnd that's important because the human body evolved over years under very specific conditions in natural light, movement all day, consistent sleep cycles, periods of stress, and then followed by recovery, eating real food.
Anna HoweBut modern life looks completely different. Artificial light, screens at midnight, constant stimulation, irregular sleep, and highly processed food.
Carey HoweAnd chronic stress. That's the big one. Our bodies were designed to handle stress in short bursts, like running from a threat or hunting, or dealing with a challenge, and then recovering directly afterward. But now a lot of people live in a permanent low-level stress situation.
Anna HoweEmails, notifications, deadlines, traffic, news, social media. Your nervous system basically never turns off.
Carey HoweExactly. So when people talk about biohacking, what they're really talking about is restoring alignment with how the body was designed to function. And that can look surprisingly simple. It's really better sleep timing, getting sunlight early in the day, eating in ways that stabilize metabolism, managing your stress, and supporting hormone balance.
Anna HoweAnd none of those things are extreme. They're actually just returning to what the body expects. So why do modern humans feel so depleted? One of the reasons this topic has exploded recently is because a lot of people just don't feel good. They feel tired, they feel foggy, they feel burned out, like their energy is unpredictable.
Carey HoweYeah. And a lot of that comes down to this mismatch between modern life and your human biology. Your nervous system was not designed for 24-hour stimulation, Facebook and Instagram.
Anna HoweAnd we see this everywhere. People sleeping five to six hours a night, running on caffeine, and working indoors all day, barely seeing sunlight. So, and eating quickly before meetings.
Carey HoweAnd your body keeps trying to compensate. Your hormones shift, your metabolism tries to adapt. Your stressed system stays activated, but eventually that starts showing up as symptoms. What are those symptoms? You'll have low energy, uh brain fog, like flickering thoughts, um, possible weight gain or or or weight loss, uh, sleep problems, mood swings.
Anna HoweAnd this is where biohacking becomes interesting because instead of asking how do I mask the system, this sorry, symptom, the question becomes, what is my body trying to tell me?
Carey HoweExactly. Biohacking isn't about overriding your biology, it's about listening to it.
Anna HoweSo, what happens when you support your biology? Good question. The really interesting thing is how quickly the body responds when people start supporting it properly. Sometimes the changes are noticeable within weeks.
Carey HoweYes, your energy is gonna stabilize, uh, you're gonna stop crashing in the afternoon, your mental clarity is gonna improve, and your moods are gonna be more balanced.
Anna HoweSleep improves for a lot for people when which then affects everything else.
Carey HoweYour recovery improves too, workouts feel better, your stress becomes easier to handle, and people start to feel something that they may not have felt for years. Resilience.
Anna HoweAnd this is where ideas like functional medicine and holistic health overlap with biohacking because they all share the same in the same mindset, or I'm sorry, similar mindset. Instead of asking what drug treats assist this symptom, they ask a deeper question. What imbalance created this problem?
Carey HoweAnd when you start addressing these root causes of these issues, that's when the real transformation happens.
Anna HoweAnother reason biohacking has exploded recently is social media. You see influencers experimenting with all kinds of things cold plunges, wearable devices, continuous glucose monitors, peptides, and longevity supplements.
Carey HoweAnd some of those tools can be very useful, but can also create the impression that biohacking is complicated or expensive. Which it absolutely doesn't have to be. In reality, the biggest improvements almost always come from the very basics good sleep, good movement, solid nutrition, stress regulation, getting some sunlight every day.
Anna HoweThose foundational things influence nearly every system in the body. Your hormones, your metabolism, brain function, and inflammation.
Carey HoweAnd once those foundations are solid, that's when more advanced tools can actually become more powerful. Which is why we're starting to see more longevity clinics uh emerging around the world, places that combine testing, personalized protocols, all kinds of new therapies. You you've seen most of these on Facebook and Instagram posted all over the place, right?
Anna HoweYeah, well, they're helping people understand their bodies better because when you understand your biology, you gain leverage over your own health.
Carey HoweAnd there's a lot of misconceptions too about biohacking. And one of the biggest misconceptions I feel is that it's only for tech entrepreneurs or extreme health enthusiasts with a lot of money and a lot of time.
Anna HoweBut the truth is that everyone is already influencing their biology every single day through their sleep, through their diet, through stress, and through movement.
Carey HoweYeah. Biohacking simply means becoming aware of these influences in your life and making them intentional.
Anna HoweAnd the funny thing is, the most powerful biohacks are often the simplest ones. Sleeping well, building muscle, eating real food, getting sunlight, and managing stress.
Carey HoweAnd those habits create a biological environment where everything else can work.
Anna HoweSo when we talk about biohacking, we're not talking about chasing trends. We're talking about understanding your biology.
Carey HoweAnd once you understand your biology, you can begin designing your health intentionally.
Anna HoweIn our next episode, we're going to dive into something that influences almost every aspect of health, your metabolism.
Carey HoweMetabolic health affects your energy, your weight, your hormones, and even how you age.
Anna HoweAnd it's one of the most misunderstood topics in modern health.
Carey HoweSo in next week's episode, we're going to break down metabolism, why it matters, and how improving it can dramatically change how you feel.
Anna HoweWe'll see you there.
